Have each guest come dressed as their favorite sports star, or wearing their
favorite team's tee-shirt, hat and, of course, sneakers are required! Any
parents attending should bring out the stripes and come dressed as referees.
Bring out the kids' (or mom and dad's) trophies and sports team's pictures to
create a personalized centerpiece.
Hang up recent sports pages from the newspapers with catchy headlines.
Tape together large pieces of oak tag along a wall. Following the template for
the grandstand, sketch out the grandstand, leaving the heads of the people in
the crowd blank. As each guest arrives, take a headshot with a Polaroid and
place it on the grandstand. This makes for a great memento for the birthday boy
or girl.
In the days prior to the party, collect the sports pages from the newspaper
and/or sports magazines. Have each guest cut out the pages to create their own
sports collage on a pennant. For pennants, cut triangles from felt squares.
When pennants are dry, tape large ends of triangle to wooden dowels.
Set up different areas in the backyard with various sports equipment:
Basketball net, tee ball set, volleyball net, soccer ball net, and more.

Play all of your favorite sports games only backwards! Split up guests into
teams and start off with 10 points each. For baseball, have them run to third
base first. For basketball have them throw the ball through the net from the
underside. Play along backwards, having each team "unscore". The
first team to get rid of all their points wins!
Hang a tire in the backyard. Have guests take turns trying to throw baseballs
or footballs through the tire. The guest who throws the most balls through the
tire in a row wins.
