FAQ

Why is the Domino® Sugar bag green?

The green bag was designed to let consumers know the product is certified CarbonFree®, which means it has a neutral carbon footprint. From the farming of the sugar cane to the milling, refining and packaging of the sugar to the product's final delivery to store shelves, the result is net zero carbon emissions in the atmosphere.

Is it the same sugar? Will it function the same way in my recipes?

Yes, it is still 100% pure cane sugar with 15 calories per teaspoon. And, it functions just like all Domino® Pure Cane Granulated Sugar. Use it cup for cup exactly like the original Domino® Pure Cane Granulated Sugar.

Do all, or other sugar brands, have a CarbonFree® status?

The only sugar brands in the country that have been certified CarbonFree® are Domino® Granulated Sugar in the specially marked GREEN packages and, our sister brands, Florida Crystals® Organic Sugar and Florida Crystals® Natural Cane Sugar.

What is CarbonFree®

CarbonFree® is the registered trademark of CarbonFund.org, a non-profit organization that certifies products as CarbonFree® following an extensive life cycle assessment to determine the product's carbon footprint and greenhouse gas reductions that in turn render the footprint neutral. Please note we use the trademark CarbonFree® not the phrase "carbon free". To learn more about the CarbonFree® certification, please visit their site at www.carbonfund.org or visit us at www.dominosugar.com/carbonfree

How does a product become certified CarbonFree®?

In order to earn CarbonFund.org's CarbonFree® certification, Domino® Sugar products were put through a comprehensive, six-month certification process. Each product's life cycle assessment, from the primary inputs of farming, milling, refining and packaging the sugar, all the way to the product's final delivery to store shelves, was evaluated by The Edinburgh Centre for Carbon Management, a noted expert on carbon management, policy issues and project development. After determining the product's footprint, Domino® Sugar's method of greenhouse gas reduction to render emissions net zero was through our production and supply of renewable energy. More than a decade ago, our agricultural operation in Florida that produces Domino® Sugar's CarbonFree® products built its own renewable energy facility, which is the largest of its kind in North America. The renewable energy facility is integral to our sugar process. We use our leftover sugar cane fiber and recycled urban wood waste to power our sugar operations as well as supply clean, renewable electricity for tens of thousands of homes.

Why did we choose to certify our products CarbonFree®?

A great debate currently exists about global warming - the extent of its existence, its causes and its cures - and we respect the variety of opinions. Our company refers to the standards set by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), which encourages voluntary greenhouse gas reductions from a variety of stakeholders, including the private sector. Please visit EPA.gov/climatechange for more information.

At our roots, we are an agriculture company. Sustainable practices have been a part of our company for years, whether through our farming methods or our energy efficiency. For more than a decade, our renewable energy facility has been providing a secure source of clean energy. Our facility reduces the need for one million barrels of oil annually. By using a renewable resource instead of fossil fuels, we eliminate hundreds of thousands of tons of carbon dioxide that would have been released each year. Additionally, by using recycled wood waste, 3.5 million cubic yards of valuable landfill space is kept available and an otherwise useless waste is converted into a high-end product: clean energy. The scale of our process is unique to our company, and we are extremely proud to have achieved it.
