Place a slice of bread in the container with your brown sugar and replace it when it gets hard. It will keep the sugar soft.

Hi,

I keep brown sugar in the freezer.  Tightly reclose the plastic bag and place it in a plastic, airtight, freezer container such as Rubbermaid or Tupperware.  No need to thaw.  It will measure out perfectly.

Here is a tip to soften already hardened brown sugar.  I don't recall where I found it on the net.

Brown sugar keeps indefinitely in an airtight container in a cool dry place. Brown sugar that hardens or forms lumps can be softened in the microwave oven. Microwave 1/2 cup water, uncovered, in a 1-cup microwave-safe measuring cup or bowl on high for 1 to 2 minutes or until boiling. Place the brown sugar in a microwave-safe container near the water. Heat, uncovered, on high until softened. Allow 1-1/2 to 2-1/2 minutes for 1/2 pound brown sugar or 2 to 3 minutes for 1 pound.

I had the same question too but I did some reaserch and found that if you put a piece of bread in with the brown sugar it will help keep it soft...
If you have already hardend brown sugar and want to soften it then place it in the microwave and check it every 30 sec. It should sften after about 2 min or so.
