Prep Time: 20 minutes / Cook time: 20 minutes / Yields: 4-6 servings

Step 1

In a small saucepan, combine the half and half, orange rinds, and cinnamon stick. Heat and bring mixture to a boil. Reduce the heat and simmer for 5 minutes. Remove from heat and cool to room temperature. Remove the orange rind and cinnamon stick and transfer to a large bowl.

Step 2

Preheat oven to 200°F. Place a wire rack on a baking sheet.

Step 3

Add eggs, sugar, vanilla, and salt to the half and half mixture. Whisk until well combined. Soak the bread slices in batches. The slices should be soaked but not excessively so that the bread slices fall apart.

Step 4

Add one tablespoon of butter to a large skillet. Over medium heat, cook as many toasts as you can fit in the pan. Cook until golden brown and crisp. Turn the slices and cook the other side. Remove from skillet and place on rack. Place in the oven to keep toast slices warm. Repeat the process with the rest of the bread slices. Serve immediately with syrup of choice, sweetened whipped cream, and fresh berries.
